Miyamoto Wants A Nintendo Console To Be A Coming-Of-Age “Rite Of Passage”

Let’s be real, Nintendo is probably one of the more accessible consoles out there and Shigeru Miyamoto wants it to be a “rite of passage” for people coming of age, according to a recent interview.

Speaking with Famitsu (translated by GamesRadar+), Miyamoto opened up that he wants Nintendo to be as well-known as school bags. He likens Nintendo to exactly that sort of thing.

“In Japan, when children start elementary school you buy them their own school bag. In the same way, I think it would be great if there was a selection to choose from like, ‘Now that you’re six, I’ve got you a Nintendo’, ‘Which Nintendo would make you the happiest?'”

Now, to be fair here, from the report, GR+ notes we’re not talking about a normal bag, we’re talking about a randoseru, which are hard-cased durable bags that come packaged with multiple pockets and are expected to last at least six years.

At the point a child, typically six, gets one of these, it’s considered a “coming-of-age” moment. This is basically what Miyamoto wants the Nintendo consoles to feel like — a coming-of-age milestone.
